A bullet casing has stove piped in your rifleвЂ™s chamber causing a jam. You run to the nearest tree to take cover and return fire with your rifle until suddenly you hear a click. An artifact, the rarest of treasures, bending the very laws of physics, born out of this man made hellhole they call the Zone. You have spent the day risking your life to get your hands on this artifact. Bandits arenвЂ™t known for their marksmanship skills, sprayвЂ™nвЂ™pray thatвЂ™s what they call it, but when thereвЂ™s a swarm of them bearing down on you it makes even a veteran S.T.A.L.K.E.R. They were hiding behind the rubble red cloths bound around their heads to hide their faces. ItвЂ™s a universally understood sound that tells you all you need to know.

The eerie tranquility is broken by the loud metallic clang of the charging handle of an AK-74 racking a 5.45x39mm full metal jack round into the chamber. All is silent except for the occasional gusts of wind sweeping across the barren landscape. You pass by a crumbling factory its ruined facade makes it look like a building from an ancient past. It is the herald of an agonizing death by radiation poisoning. Shadow of Chernobyl also sports a beautiful wind simulation, its eerie bluster wailing in your ears, kicking up leaves and dust from the sides of the ZoneвЂ™s abandoned roads.As you travel the long winding dirt road you always keep an ear to your Geiger counter, listening intently for its clicking song. Its cloud-scarred skies weigh heavy with foreboding, and what little light that breaks through this slate-grey ceiling is sickly and muted.

The strange and haunting atmosphere of ChernobylвЂ™s Exclusion Zone has lost none of its potency in the last decade. When all its ideas come together, thereвЂ™s nothing quite like it as an FPS. Nevertheless, thereвЂ™s a reason why Shadow of ChernobylвЂ™s tenth anniversary is worth celebrating. There have been disease epidemics that started more auspiciously than Shadow of Chernobyl.

Both the story and the gameвЂ™s more unique mechanics are terribly explained, and the writing is absolutely appalling. The first story mission tasks you with clearing a factory crammed with heavily armed bandits, while your character is equipped only with a pistol that might as well fire grapes for all its effectiveness. It also has a difficulty spike thatвЂ™s as sudden and punishing as a rogue wave. The opening area, the Cordon, does a poor job of conveying STALKERвЂ™s strange and still largely unique atmosphere.

That said, I think my own disappointment stemmed more from the fact that Shadow of Chernobyl doesnвЂ™t sell itself particularly well.
